Quite the achievement(s) for our team member Stylianos Spyroglou, opens an external URL in a new window! Earlier this year, we filed our patent on WIPO under the reference number PCT/AT2025/060225. Do you want to hear more about it? Then check out the promotional video which was created with the help of Mr. Alfred Zacharias. A few weeks ago, Stelios shared his latest research results with the broader catalysis community at the 16th European Congress on Catalysis in Trondheim, Norway. There he gave a talk about "stabilisation strategies of self-heating catalysts for CO2 conversion to syngas with magnetic induction heating", which was well received by the audience. Congrats!
We have a new paper published in JACS Au, titled “Isolated Ni2+ Cations as the Active Centers for 1-Butene Dimerization in Zeolites”! In this collaboration with TU Munich, we used different Ni2+-containing zeolites with small, medium, and large pore sizes as catalysts in dimerizing 1-butene to octenes and saw two orders of magnitude increased activity for the large-pore zeolite Y which stabilizes the bulky transition states. A nice story to read through, which you can do for free in open access here: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jacsau.5c00461, opens an external URL in a new window
We welcome our two new Master students from France: Noemie and Enora! They will work in our CO2 utilization projects on Cu-based tandem catalysts and Fe-based self-heating catalysts, respectively. Bienvenue à Vienne!

They did it again! Maricruz and Nicole participated in the packed Women’s Run in Vienna’s beautiful Prater, and both finished the 10 km run with new personal records. Not in the least because of all the cheering they got from the team, of course. Cool poses included. Overall, a great event!
Maricruz and five other experts from academia and industry discussed the current and future challenges of sustainable chemical production. A stimulating debate on the research needs and the timeline expected to implement alternative, greener processes in our production of fuels and chemicals.
Glad to have been invited to the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) for the conference end of April! Professors Javier Ruiz Martinez and Pedro Castano from KAUST gathered a selected group of researchers from all around the globe for discussions on the future role of catalysts in sustainable chemical processes.
Topics ranged from reactor engineering, use of alternative feedstocks, and design of novel catalysts to transform CO2 into useful chemicals. As invited speaker, Maricruz talked about our work on magnetic nanoparticle catalysts inductively heated. Christian presented a poster about our latest results on CO2 activation over Cu-CeO2 catalysts. All in all, a great conference and exciting research.
Shortly before Noelia left for her stay in Japan, we took the opportunity to do another pub quiz. Our group got every question right! Stay tuned for our next pub quiz successes ;)
Thanks to the ClusCat Lab for the great time, see you in summer, Noelia, and have a great time in Japan!

We welcome two new Master students to our ever growing international group! Tamar, who prefers to be called Tako, is going with our project on Cu-catalysts for the conversion of CO2, while Daniel will join the alcohol-to-jet-fuel project. This will be an exciting six next months to be sure. Welcome, and მოგესალმებით, and ongi etorri!
