Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martina Marchetti-Deschmann

Martina Marchetti-Deschmann holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Vienna. She is a full professor of Mass Spectrometric Methods / Analytical Chemistry at TU Wien, where she heads the research group for Mass Spectrometric Bio- and Polymer Analysis. She also heads the Metabolomics and Bioprocess Analysis Laboratory (in collaboration with Shimadzu), which became a Shimadzu Innovation Center in 2013.

After completing her studies at the University of Vienna, Martina accepted an assistant position at the Vienna University of Technology. Besides teaching at TU Wien, Martina has been working for over 20 years in the field of mass spectrometry and coupling techniques, for the identification, quantification, detailed characterization and spatial localization of biomolecules. Most of her research is aimed at the development and application of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry for molecular mass analysis and imaging techniques, with the aim of translating analytical and technological advances into industrial, medical and biological applications.

Research stays have taken her to leading international laboratories, with major milestones in her career being a research stay with Franz Hillenkamp (MALDI, University of Münster, D) shortly before her PhD, and a sabbatical with Richard Caprioli (MS Imaging, Vanderbilt University, US).

She is an internationally recognized expert and driving force in MS imaging with a special focus on multimodal imaging. Today she is president-elect of the MS Imaging Society (MSIS, since 2024 IMSIS), board member of the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation (IMSF) and the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry (ASAC).

Her research was awarded the Beynon Prize of the journal “Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry” in 2007 and the Fritz Feigl Prize of the ASAC in 2013.
