After completing her degree in Technical Chemistry at Graz University of Technology and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and a doctorate in Technical Sciences at Graz University of Technology, she completed a postdoc at Graz University of Technology. In 2007, Prof. Birner-Grünberger habilitated in biochemistry and took over the management of the Core Facility for Mass Spectrometry at the Medical University of Graz; in 2012 she was appointed Associate Professor at the Institute of Pathology at the Medical University of Graz and in 2019 she accepted the professorship for Multimodal Analytical Chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology.

In her research, Prof. Birner-Grünberger's interests lie at the interface between bioanalytics (especially omics technologies), biochemistry and cell biology, biotechnology and basic medical research.
