After completing his degree in microbiology and his doctorate in microbiology and genetics at the University of Vienna, he undertook various research stays, including in Wageningen in the Netherlands and in Naples. In 1999, Prof. Mach qualified as a professor of molecular biology; shortly afterwards he was appointed Associate Professor and in March 2016 accepted the position of Professor of Biochemical Technology at TU Wien.

In research, Prof. Mach's interests lie at the fluid boundaries between biochemistry and molecular biology, with a particular focus on the production of customized microorganisms for their application in white biotechnology & biofuel production as well as in the production of secondary metabolites. A further field of research to which Prof. Mach is dedicated is the molecular ecology & molecular diagnostics of microorganisms in technical and natural systems.
