Matthias Steiger

Associate Prof. DI Dr.techn. Matthias Steiger

Habilitated for: Biochemistry

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matthias Steiger has been at TU Wien since 01.08.2019 at the Institute of Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Technical Biosciences and heads the Biochemistry working group.

After his diploma studies in Technical Chemistry and doctoral studies in Technical Sciences at TU Wien, he conducted research as a PostDoc at the Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology (acib), at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences and at Leiden University (Netherlands). In 2022, he completed his habilitation in biochemistry at TU Wien.

Research interests:

His research team focuses on the production of biochemicals such as organic acids, proteins and other biomass components. Microorganisms, such as filamentous fungi and yeasts, are investigated and developed and improved with the help of metabolic engineering to enable their application in industrial biotechnology. He heads the Christian Doppler Laboratory for sustainable bioproduction with fungi through targeted strain development and is a key researcher at the Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology.

A particular focus is on the establishment of sustainable production processes using renewable resources such as carbon dioxide or methanol. These topics are being researched as part of the doctoral program CO2Refinery and in the Cluster of Excellence Circular Bioengineering, opens an external URL in a new window.
