Assoc. Prof. DI Dr. Alexander K. Opitz heads the Electrochemical Energy Conversion research group at TU Wien.

After completing his diploma degree in Technical Chemistry, he received his doctorate from TU Wien in 2011 with a dissertation on the investigation of the oxygen exchange kinetics of platinum model electrodes on solid electrolytes. In his scientific work after his doctorate, he focused primarily on the in-situ characterization of mixed ionic and electronic conductive materials and the investigation of so-called exsolution electrodes. This topic also led him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a visiting scientist in 2017. In January 2022, Prof. Opitz completed his habilitation in electrochemistry and was subsequently appointed Associate Professor.

In his current research, Alexander Opitz is working on electrode materials for high-temperature CO2 electrolysis, as well as on novel oxide proton conductors for the electrochemical hydrogenation of CO2 or CO to hydrocarbons and - particularly challenging - N2 to ammonia (NH3).
