Helmuth Hoffmann studied technical chemistry at TU Wien from 1976 to 1982, completed his doctorate at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry and received his PhD in 1986. After a three-year research stay at the University of California, Riverside, he returned to TU Wien. In 1996 he habilitated in the field of surface chemistry and was appointed associate university professor. His research focuses on the chemical modification of solid surfaces, the production and characterization of nanostructured surfaces and the development of new infrared spectroscopic surface analysis methods.
