Some small dictionary of Austricisms can also help to fill yourself more comfortable during your stay:

  • Beisl [baizl]: simple restaurant with local cuisine, e.g. Glacis Beisl (reservation needed)
  • Heuriger [hoirige]: even more simple tavern with own vine, mostly a bit outside
  • Palatschinken: pancake
  • Spitzer [shpritzer]: (basically) wine with ½ soda water
  • Marie [mari]: (coll.) money
  • Frankfurter: Vienna sausages are called differently only in Austria
  • Trafik: small shop to buy cigarettes, tram and parking tickets
  • Professor: (mainly) any person with University education, e.g. school teacher

Coffee lexicon:

  • Coffee [kAfe]: a drink containing caffeine but without taste
  • Coffee [kaffEE]: good coffee
  • Schwarzer: mokka (~espresso)
  • Brauner: = mokka with 3 drops of milk
  • Melange: = mokka with a lot of milk (~cappuccino)
