Long title: Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence for Enhanced Aircraft Inspection
Assignment to our (IMW) research priorities:
- Digital Design,
- Artificial Intelligence for Industry,
- Augmented Reality (AR)
Duration: 01.09.2024 – 31.10.2025
Abstract:
The project aims to evaluate the application of an AR-based system, supported by AI, for aircraft inspections. Using Microsoft HoloLens 2 and advanced visual computing algorithms, the project seeks to standardize and enhance the visual inspection process. The system will serve as a cognitive assistant, leveraging image and text data to identify and classify aircraft components, providing real-time decision support and reducing human error in inspections. This initiative aims to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and safety of aircraft maintenance practices.
Results:
- A neural network-based image classification model will be developed to identify relevant parts or components of the aircraft.
- An OCR-based algorithm for recognizing serial numbers on plates will be developed.
- A software solution that can switch between the two algorithms will be tested under near-real conditions on the Microsoft HoloLens 2. Additionally, it will be examined how these algorithms are capable of real-time processing and what impact they have on scalability and flexibility under changing environmental conditions.
