Basic programmes

Extensive support for research and development (R&D) is open to all topics enabling the FFG's basic programme division to strengthen the competitive capacity of Austrian businesses. The division offers funding programmes that are compatible with each other for any project phase - from the initial idea to the specific research project and transition to market. FFG experts assess the application from a technical and business perspective; funding decisions are made several times throughout the year. Universities can only participate as third-party service providers.

Structural programmes

These programmes enable businesses, research and transfer institutions to find new forms of collaboration, generate new knowledge and develop new areas of strength. The structural programme division supports skills development and the transfer of innovation into cooperation between academia, business and society, thus optimising (infra)structures for research and development. This means that the Austrian innovation system and the Austrian economy are continuously being reinforced.

Thematic programmes

These programmes have a strategic focus on research, development and innovation. Selected cutting-edge fields and key technologies with a high potential for business and society are thus targeted and given constant support. A combined subject portfolio enables synergies between research, technology and innovation focus areas and communication technology, digitalization and broadband infrastructure, mobility and transport infrastructure, aviation, energy, urban development and the environment, production technologies, nanotechnologies and quantum technologies, as well as security and defence.

European and international programmes

The task of this division is to continuously strengthen Austria's participation in programmes, initiatives and campaigns in European and international research and technological collaborations - particularly the EU research programme, Horizon Europe. The information, consultancy and networking offers for businesses, universities, research institutes, etc. ranges from project-specific support to targeted support in strategic positioning within the European research and innovation environment. The strategic offers of support also take account of European background information, as well as future-orientated information on developments in the European FTI programme sphere.

Agency for aviation and aerospace

This is the docking station on the international aerospace scene for Austrian business and science. It implements domestic aviation and aerospace policy and represents Austria on international aviation and aerospace committees. As a result, Austria's representation in the European Space Agency (ESA) is strategically important. The aim is to strengthen the international positioning of Austrian industry, business and science in these key technologies for economic and technical development and the continued development of an Austrian space cluster.

This programme is aimed at highly-qualified researchers from abroad, in all disciplines, who can make a contribution towards further scientific development in an Austrian research institution.

An additional objective of this programme is the reintegration of post-doctoral researchers from their period abroad and their reintroduction to an Austrian research institution.

Peer-reviewed publications

Publication costs for publications resulting from FWF projects cannot be funded by FWF. These usually need to be financed in advanced from general project costs. However, they can be settled later via the "Referenced publications" programme.

The Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF), opens an external URL in a new window is the regional funding organisation for fundamental research and issues calls for tender within the context of thematic focus areas. The focus areas are established for the long term cooperations, to establish internationally competitive scientific skills  and promote Vienna as a scientific centre of excellence.  The establishment of focal points is preceded by an extensive research and consultation process.

Subject-specific tenders invite the relevant Viennese research community to submit major research projects, research groups or smaller formats (e.g. summer schools).
