For admission with a master's degree from another national or international post-secondary educational institution (university, university of applied sciences, etc.) an application, opens in new window with the Admission Office is necessary, as the equivalence to the relevant master's programme offered at TU Wien has to be evaluated by the respective dean of studies.
Certain master's or diploma programmes, opens an external URL in a new window from Austrian universities of applied science are equivalent based on ordinances issued by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research and allow for direct admission without prior evaluation of equivalence. When there is no complete equivalence, the ordinance stipulates that the doctoral programme will be extended by 1 or 2 semesters to match with a university master's programme.
Necessary documents
Please submit the following documents via post or in person (no email, no fax):
- duly signed application form
- supply a valid email-address in the respective field of the application form
- document of completion of Master's/Diploma degree (officially legalised copy with official translation)
- diploma supplement, transcript of records, index with ECTS and contact hours (officially legalised copy with official translation)
- Summary of the Master's/Diploma thesis (abstract)
- Confirmation of supervision by a professor of TU Wien
- passport copy
- for third-country nationals with Austrian adresses: confirmation of registration ("Meldebestätigung")
Applications sent in electronically will not be considered.
Please note that because of repeated customs payment demands, mail sent via express shipment companies from a non-EU/EEA country may not be accepted by the admission office! Please also refrain from giving our e-mail address to the courier services as we have no use for shipment updates.
NOTE!
Documents issued in countries other than Austria are subject to legalisation regulations. All documents whose originals were not issued in German or English shall be officially translated. Please have documents translated only after legalisation. The official translation must be inseparably attached to the original document!
Send your documents in good time!
Due to the high number of applications, processing may take 10-12 weeks. Please understand that the Admissions Office cannot provide any information (neither by phone nor by email) about the processing status of your application before this processing time has expired.
In order to obtain admission for the semester applied for completed applications can be submitted within the following periods:
- winter semester:
- begin of February until end of July (EU/EEA citizens)
- January 16th until July 15th (third-country nationals)
- summer semester:
- begin of August until end of January (EU/EEA citizens)
- July 16th until January 15th (third-country nationals)
If missing documents are not submitted within this date, the application can only be assessed for the following semester, without exception.
Processing the Application
After receiving your application, the Admission Office is verifying the existence and authenticity of the documents. If there are any formal irregularities in the documents the Admission Office will inform you by post or e-mail.
If missing documents, translations etc. are not sent within the set deadlines, the application will be rejected and admission at TU Wien is not possible. Therefore, follow the instructions of the Admission Office carefully!
Next step is to verify, if the completed bachelor/diploma programme is equivalent to the relevant bachelor's programme at TU Wien. In case that equivalence has been established, only basically supplementary examinations are prescribed in the admission letter. They have to be passed during the master's degree programme to establish full equivalence. There is no need to enroll in the bachelor's programme.
Should the respective dean of studies require further information or documents, they will notify you via e-mail.
If the completed bachelor/diploma programme is not equivalent, because more than 30 ECTS-points shall be prescribed to establish full equivalence, the admission at TU Wien is not possible!
Prescribed supplementary examinations like German must be passed prior to admission as degree student and can be completed at the University Preparation Programme ("Vorstudienlehrgang der Wiener Universitäten - VWU"). Therefore, you will get enrolled as non-degree-student. You have to pay the course fee.
NOTE!
Applicants, who have to pass the supplementary examination German, have to watch additionally the deadlines for course-registration to the University Preparation Programme! After completion of the evaluation by the respective dean of studies and when the equivalence has been determined, the letter of admission will be issued and sent via post mail. You will also be notified by post mail if the admission is not possible.
Read all received documents from TU Wien very carefully! They contain all necessary information!
Step 3: Admission letter received, what now?
Should you be subject to visa requirements, you can apply for residence authorisation with the Austrian diplomatic authorities (embassy, consulate) in your country of origin, exhibiting your admission letter.
NOTE!
The Admission Office cannot provide you with any information or help in visa requirements. It is not the responsibility of the Admission Office. If you have any questions please ask the Austrian diplomatic authority in your country or the Magistratsabteilung 35 in Vienna for help.
Online Application
The online application is independet of the application for admission, but must be completed at the latest before the personal enrolment at the university. At the end of the process, an appointment for the first-time admission must be booked (this only applies to the winter semester).
Personal Enrolment
After completion of the online application you have to come to the Admission Office in person.
Please ensure to bring the following documents with you:
- your admission letter,
- your admission code (from the online application),
- your valid passport and
- your valid residence permit if available.
If you have an admission letter for the winter semester, you can register in person at the Admissions Office until October 31st. If you have an admission letter for the summer semester, you can register in person at the Admissions Office until March 31st.
