JSPS scholarship for research in Japan

Austrian scientists are offered the opportunity to conduct research at a university in Japan.

The JSPS - Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (Postdoctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers) grant is awarded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and enables young scientists and university lecturers from Austrian universities to spend a research period in Japan.

  • Target group: Postdocs, scientists
  • Duration: 12 to 24 months
  • Funding body: Japanese government
  • Submission deadline: At any time (but no later than December 31, 2024)

MEXT scholarship from the Japanese government

MONBUKAGAKUSHO:MEXT
(Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)

Austrian nationals are offered the opportunity to study at a university in Japan. The scholarship is intended to lay the foundation for future academic cooperation between Austria and Japan.

Submission of application documents to the Japan Information and Cultural Center by June 2, 2025!

Conditions:

  • Austrian citizenship
  • Age: born on or after April 2, 1991
  • Graduates and students who will graduate by the time they arrive in Japan at the latest
  • 6 months language course in Japan (can be omitted for English-language degree programs or sufficient Japanese language skills)

Duration:                       

  • Research students: 1 1/2 years
  • for students of a master's or doctoral program, the stay is extended until the completion of the degree program

Scholarship:               

  • Approx. 143,000 - 145,000 yen per month (subject to change)
  • Free study (no enrollment and tuition fees)
  • Flight (Austria - Japan - Austria)

Pre-selection:             

  • Written test to check foreign language skills (English and Japanese)
  • Selection interview by an Austrian-Japanese commission
