Stakeholders influence the process

In addition to the insights from the environmental assessment there are environmental requirements from different stakeholders which have to be considered within the product development. A distinction can be made between mandatory requirements, for example resulting from legal standards, such as the WEEE-Directive, and optional requirements, such as customer expectations. They vary between products and may include the following:

As soon as the stakeholders are known, their environmental requirements for the product can be investigated. Then E-QFD method ("Environmental Quality Function Deployment") can be used to ”translate” the requirements into specific design parameters which then can be used for product development.

As an example for optional stakeholder requirements, you can take a look at the eco-labels and their product-specific award criteria e.g. for the Blue Angel, opens an external URL in a new window.
