Transport policymaking in rural areas is still too often focused on cars. To reduce land use for streets and offer more sustainable mobility options, the NUTSHELL@CE project aims transform transport planning in these areas. Partners from eight countries work towards a public transport system that is based on integrated spatial and transport planning. This new approach will increase flexibility, offer better access to transport corridors, harmonise timetables, and improve transport links in rural areas.

TU Wien’s FVV participates in the project as one of the knowledge partners, playing the following roles.

  • TU Wien’s FVV is a key knowledge partner to further develop the analysis and planning tool Public Transport Service Quality Classifications (ÖV-Güteklassen), which has been already used in Austria as well as in Switzerland. Our research team will provide the accumulated knowledge and know-how to analyse spatial accessibility to public transport services.
  • TU Wien coordinates the second work package, in which territorial project partners (e.g. municipalities) will engage stakeholders to develop local action plans. The previous works of many international and national projects, such as WiWiT – Who is Who in Transport (INTERREG AT-SK) and FLADEMO (FFG, Mobilität der Zukunft), will be deployed in this project.
  • TU Wien will technically support the pilot actions clustered in three groups: improvement of accessibility to public transport on foot and by bicycles, systematization of timetable, and closing missing links still existing within local public transport systems at territorial partners.
  • Towards the end of the project, TU Wien will play a central role to establish a knowledge hub, a digital repository where the key learnings and findings of the project are stored and published in a long term.

NUTSHELL@CE is led by the Union of the Municipalities in Savio Valley, Italy. 12 partners including TU Wien participates in this project. From Austria, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG participates as an Associated Strategic Partner to TU Wien and supports the implementation of timetable systematization in other Central European countries.

The project is co-financed by Interreg Central Europe, a programme of European Union’s European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
