Brief information on the project

In deammonification ammonium oxidizing and anammox bacteria work hand in hand. Anammox bacteria convert ammonium and nitrite, which is produced by the ammonium oxidizing bacteria, into elemental nitrogen gas without the presence of oxygen. During this process, there is no need for organic carbon. Reduction of nitrogen in sidestream treatment lowers the nitrogen load in the mainstream process. Due to lower nitrogen load in the aeration tank, COD removal in a pretreatment step (for example micro-sieves) can be elevated and therefore, promote an increased energy production (biogas production).

The purpose of this study is to implement a full-scale sidestream deammonification with Linpor® carriers. The aim is to ensure a high sludge age for the accumulation of anammox bacteria by using carriers, especially in the start-up phase. Sampling campaigns at the start-up and early phase of operation will help to proof guidelines for a successful start-up and operation of sidestream-deammonification with Linpor®.
