Prof. Ewald Balcar (1940–2024): An obituary

The Atominstitut and the TU Wien mourn the loss of Prof Dr Ewald Balcar.

The Atominstitut mourns the loss of Prof Dr Ewald Balcar. He was employed at the Atominstitut from September 1979 to December 1998 as Ao.Univ.Prof. and from January 1999 to September 2003 as Univ. Prof. In addition to his research and teaching activities, he has written a large number of specialist articles and books, one of his best-known works being "Introduction to the Graphical Theory of Angular Momentum, opens an external URL in a new window". His demanding intellectual work, but above all the exchange with his colleagues and students, meant a great deal to him and always brought him fulfilment and inspiration.

After a long and serious illness, Ewald Balcar passed away in May 2024 at the age of 85. Our sympathies go out to his family.
