New Master program „NanoBiosciences & NanoMedicine“ starts in autumn 2011

Nanotechnology is one of the key technologies of the 21st century. It is already of immense significance in medicine as well as industry. Together with the Danube University Krems and the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna, Vienna University of Technology has developed a course in nanomedicine and nanotechnology which imparts interdisciplinary and practice-oriented knowledge in this sub-speciality. The course will start in the autumn of 2011.

Three universities are contributing their specialised knowledge to the new part-time program named "MSc NanoBiosciences & NanoMedicine", which will start in the winter semester of 2011. The lectures will be held in Krems and Vienna. Danube University’s cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna has made it possible to develop a unique curriculum. The Master’s program will address interdisciplinary requirements and opportunities in the field of nanotechnology. “Nanotechnology has developed into an enabling technology for many fields of science. Especially in biotechnology and medicine, the approach through nanoscience is the principal means of making new discoveries and employing techniques of advanced analysis. Knowledge of the state of the art of nanotechnology techniques with special emphasis on biology and medicine will enable the students to keep pace with the most recent discoveries as well as apply the latest innovations in their daily routine“, so Univ.-Prof. Dr. Erich Gornik, Academic Director, Vienna University of Technology.

Curriculum and Target group
In addition to imparting basic knowledge in the fields of nanotechnology, biophysics, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and molecular biology, the course will encompass revolutionary approaches in tumour therapy, tissue and organ substitution, drug delivery systems, the biotolerability of materials, sensor technology and the use of nanoanalytical methods. Also the risks of nanotechnology will be discussed and reviewed critically. This six-semester MSc program particularly addresses executives, researchers, developers and decision-makers in biology, the pharmaceutical industry, and medicine as well as persons with a general background in natural or engineering science.. .
