The ERC grants of the European Research Council (ERC) are probably the most prestigious and best funded grants in Europe. Each year, an ERC Starting Grant is awarded to young researchers who are at the beginning of their scientific careers but have already achieved excellent results. The grants of up to 1.5 million euros are intended to enable researchers to establish their own research groups at the highest international level.

This year's grants were announced on 5 September and, as last year, TU Vienna is delighted to have received three awards: Esther Heid (Institute of Materials Chemistry) is developing artificial intelligence that can predict chemical reactions. Florian Glöcklhofer (Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry) is developing new processes to produce organic molecules whose electronic properties can be exploited for technical purposes. Marco De Paoli (Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer) is investigating how fluids move through porous materials - a question that is as important for energy storage as it is for the formation of icebergs at sea.
