Together, spatial and land-use planning documentations and building codes ensure an orderly spatial development of an area. The first answers the question of what and where to build and the latter defines how to build in a defined area. Building codes provide the possibility to construct based on a plan. Therefore, they are an important tool to enable the advancement of a sustainable urban environment.

This publication sheds a light on the spatial development of the city of Sarajevo in the absence of a building code. Over the last 100 years, a dichotomy between planning and coding systems has emerged there, resulting in a current system of unsynchronised local development plans and arbitrarily granted building permits. The study develops a future building code model for Sarajevo. This new modus operandi shall build a foundation for a more synchronized and sustainable future development in Sarajevo also with regards to developments within the EU.

The book addresses spatial and urban planners, jurists, architects, sociologists, and historians of architecture in Continental and Southeast Europe.
