The seminar "Practical Construction Management" (6.0 ECTS) took place for the fifth time in cooperation between the IBB of TU Wien and Wiener Linien. This year, the seven participating Master's students dealt with construction operations and construction management tasks for the project "Südzugang U4-Station Heiligenstadt" (construction of new pedestrian accesses to the subway station). The three small groups formed were each based on different variants of the construction site access to the island construction site: 1) pedestrian tunnel, 2) temporary bridge and 3) level track crossing.

Among other things, the groups had to draw up concepts for the construction process and construction site logistics and a technical report for the operational implementation of the construction measures, determine the approximate costs of the overall work and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each construction site access option. Finally, a comparison of the three access variants was to be carried out by the small groups.

In September 2023, an intensive project week took place at Wiener Linien's premises in Erdberg, during which the students dealt with the tasks for the first time, visited the construction site and the surrounding area and had the opportunity to obtain expertise from Wiener Linien on the issues. Challenging questions concerned, for example, the installation of the ÖBB auxiliary bridges under the tracks, the permissibility of swinging over tracks with loads, the lifting of the footbridges and the positioning of the cranes on the construction site. At the end of the project week, the first results and proposed solutions were already available and were presented as part of an interim presentation. In the weeks that followed, the students continued to work on the tasks at home. The interim results were presented again in Erdberg at the beginning of November.

After a briefing by the IBB assistants, the students presented their final results to employees of Wiener Linien and IBB at the beginning of December. The audience was enthusiastic about the presentations and the numerous ideas and solutions. Nothing stands in the way of holding the seminar again next winter semester!
