As part of the staff excursion, the team from our institute visited the U2/U5 Linienkreuz construction site - section: Matzleinsdorfer Platz - tunneling under the Gürtel. The icing systems at the surface of the site, the approx. 30 m deep excavation pit and the pipework at the working face were inspected.

After a presentation of the most important points of the fascinating construction project by DI Hornich, DI Özkoral and Ing. Pfeffer and a subsequent safety briefing, our employees were guided through the excavation pit. At the beginning, the cooling units of the icing system with a total output of 860 kWh were presented. It is a brine icing system that produces the frost body in a closed system with flow and return. Afterwards, the impressive excavation pit was entered. On one side of the pit, a tunnel was built using mining techniques and an elm tunnel. On the other side of the excavation pit, the face of the future tunnel under the belt could be seen with the icing pipes installed. At one face, the frost body was already sufficiently formed and the mining excavation was started shortly afterwards.

The tour of the construction site was exceptionally interesting, especially being able to visit an icing plant in Vienna is a rarity.

A big thank you goes to DI Hornich, DI Özkoral and Ing. Pfeffer for the exciting site visit!
