Industrial Transition in North Sweden

[Translate to English:] Alexandra Pintilie in Kiruna

As part of her dissertation project on industrial transitions, Alexandra Pintilie was able to complete an exploratory research phase in the Norrbotten region in Sweden. The dynamics in the region have emerged in recent years due to the natural resources available locally (renewable energy, minerals including rare earths), which have triggered significant new investments in the context of international competitiveness.

In addition to discussions with representatives of some municipalities, the region and other relevant stakeholders, Alexandra also had the opportunity to visit one of the world's largest underground iron ore mines in Kiruna. Due to tectonic shifts as a result of iron ore mining, around a third of the town has to relocate a few kilometers away, which is also associated with social challenges.

The exploratory field study was kindly made possible by a grant from the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning.
