1st call of 2025 NII International Internship Program - Guidelines for Candidates

Target candidates

Master and/or Ph. D. students who are enrolled at TU Wien.

Application procedure

Fill out the NII International Internship Program Application Form and submit it to JASEC (jasec@tuwien.ac.at) AND in CC to Prof. Thomas Eiter (thomas.eiter@tuwien.ac.at) with your CV attached.

Choose up to three topics out of the list of topics from NII's website, opens an external URL in a new window and establish contact with NII supervisors who match the desired research topic. For a successful application you will need a letter of acceptance from the supervising professor (this can also be the e-mail correspondence etc.)

A nomination by JASEC at TU Wien is necessary as no direct application from candidates is accepted.

Internal Deadline for submitting your application to JASEC is April 10, 2025.

Attention:

• Do not send applications directly to NII as your documents will be checked internally before a nomination is sent to the NII.
• For a successful application, applicants need to receive an informal letter of consent (an informal E-Mail is sufficient) which states that a potential supervisor agrees to welcome the applicant in his/her lab.
• For this call, NII encourages students to arrive from March 1st, 2025. Arrivals before March will be considered as exceptional. Please note that NII is not accepting arrivals after March for this call. 
• Available research topics and application forms can be downloaded from the NII Website.

Notification

Notification of successful candidates will be made after the end of May, 2025.
NII will notify the contact person of each partner institution.

Important: acceptance as an NII Internship student is subject to the condition that the student works on the approved project topic, and complies with NII and Japanese government regulations. In the event that these conditions are not respected, NII may take appropriate action that may include the termination of their internship.

Sojourn expenses

5,700 JPY per day as sojourn expenses will be covered by NII while intern students are staying at NII.
Transportation expenses are in principle not paid.

Insurance

National Health Insurance
Important: by Japanese law any visitor residing in Japan for more than three months must make contributions to the national health insurance program. Internship students are liable for payment of an insurance fee of approximately 1000 JPY (less than 8$/€) per month to the local government of their residence. Students must follow the necessary administrative payment procedures at their local municipal office.

Overseas Travel Insurance
Internship students are encouraged to extend their home student insurance to cover their travel to and stay at NII. In case of difficulty in getting such insurance, NII may help and subscribe a travel insurance which covers most medical conditions (except for pre-existing / chronic conditions, dental care, vaccinations, and certain other conditions).
* Under the terms of the insurance program, students must arrive in Japan at most one day prior to the commencement of their internship, and leave Japan no more than one day after their internship ends. This overseas travel Insurance does not cover trips that are outside of the Internship period. Students who do not meet the requirements for overseas travel insurance need to arrange it on their own.*

We recommend that interns consider whether they may need other types of insurance, and if so, arrange it before arriving in Japan. Examples include travel insurance to cover the cost of flight cancellations, lost baggage, and so on.

Time frame

For this call, we encourage students to end their stay before March 31st, 2026. The duration of the internship should be also discussed with NII supervisors. The internship activities should be for a period of 60 to 180 days excluding traveling days. A minimum of 2 months stay is compulsory.

Visa application procedure will be instructed to the successful candidates after the selection.
