First on-site-module at TU Wien for new MSc Renewable Energy participants

From Thu, 17th September to Sun, 20th September, the students of our international part-time program MSc Renewable Energy Systems attended their first on-site module at TU Wien. The students as well as the program team and lecturers where glad to get this opportunity to meet each other and enjoyed the discussions and constructive work in the classroom.

Since it was the first physical get-together since program start in July 2020, the class started off with a casual Welcome Breakfast and a few welcoming words from academic director Prof. Reinhard Haas and our partner Energiepark Bruck/Leitha. After enjoying their “Powidlgolatschn” (a typical seasonal Austrian puff pastry stuffed with a plum-filling), the students started with the lectures on Bio-mass production.

Some participants still were not able to join due to ongoing Covid19 regulations in their home country. Therefore, special videoconferencing tools were installed to ensure good audio and video quality in the classroom and enable discussion with and participation of students from abroad.

On their last day of the module, Sun 20th September, the students got to do an excursion to TU Wien`s Plus Energy High Rise Building. This building is the world’s first office tower, that can claim to feed more energy into the power grid than is required to operate and use the building. The Plus-Energy Office High-Rise Building is the embodiment of an integral, innovative energy concept that is redefining energy efficiency. Besides this, the integral building concept demonstrates one thing in particular: that plus-energy office buildings are not only technically possible, but are also, above all, economically feasible concepts for the future of working on and in buildings. The 'Plus-Energie-Bürohochhaus' is a unique research and construction project implemented by Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) and the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG). It is more than just the refurbishment of an existing university building. The research project arose from several interdisciplinary projects within the TU's research focus point Energy and Environment - from the scientific planning to the implementation.

We are looking forward to our next module in October 2020 with more excursions and a lecture module specialized on Photovoltaics.
