Empowerment Through Education: A Woman's Journey in Real Estate

MSc Real Estate Investment & Valuation alumna Stefanie Rida-Tupy gives insights into how her gender, coupled with her commitment to education, has shaped her career.

In the realms of technology, business, and beyond, women continue to break barriers and forge new pathways. Their journeys, marked by unique challenges and triumphs, offer invaluable insights into both the present state and future possibilities of women in the workforce. At the heart of these narratives is a common thread: the transformative power of continuous education. In our interview Stefanie Rida-Tupy talks about how to overcome stereotypes, reactions from colleagues and customers as well as tips for women who want to take on management responsibilities.

How has being a woman positively influenced your path in your industry?

Being a woman, along with my educational background and experiences, has empowered me to adopt diverse and new perspectives, develop innovative solutions, and break down stereotypical patterns of thought.

What challenges have you faced as a woman in the professional world, and how have you overcome them?

I've encountered leaders, colleagues, and clients who approached me with prejudice and skepticism. Resilience, support from mentors, and understanding that I don't need to please everyone were key to overcoming these challenges. My passion for my profession and daily efforts to enact positive change in the workplace keep me motivated. Establishing a women's network for mutual support was another milestone in helping other women in their professional journeys.

How has continuing education, specifically your MSc, influenced your career?

Continuous technical and personal development is crucial to me. The MSc program was an excellent addition to my civil engineering degree, deepening my knowledge of real estate and expanding my network with fascinating professionals from various sectors.

What importance do you place on continuous education for women?

I view continuous education as essential for improving professional opportunities, personal development, and achieving personal goals, regardless of gender.

What advice would you give your younger self about advancing professionally?

Stop dawdling and just do it. Making mistakes and failing are part of the process.

How can companies better support women, especially those in or aspiring to leadership roles?

Companies must incorporate gender equality at all leadership levels into their strategic agenda. Women's varied skills benefit companies, and equality at all leadership levels is an economic and social necessity. Measures range from flexible working models for work-family balance, equality in hiring, promotions, and pay, promoting an inclusive culture of openness, diversity, and transparency, creating mentoring programs to support women in leadership positions and provide development opportunities, to targeted training programs to strengthen leadership skills. Each company must find its way to harness the full potential of its employees and leaders.
