On March 5, students from the 16th group of the ETIA master's program spent a day at the premises of voestalpine Linz. For the first time we travelled by train – a clear decision of our sustainably-minded students.

After an overview of the steel production process at the voestalpine visitor center, we went to the heart of the matter – the blast furnace, or “hell,” as tour guide Rudi put it. Steel is produced and skimmed here by hand at a truly infernal 1,800 degrees Celsius. The heat from the raw steel rods, which had been “cooled” to 80 degrees, could even be felt through the window panes of the bus the students noticed enthusiastically.

After a snack, 2 experts from the environmental department provided information about the future greentec steel project, in which coke will be substituted by hydrogen from 2027 onwards.

The students left Linz impressed from this living example of decarbonization in the industry - and with job offers, as the voestalpine is always looking for striving, international graduates.
