In the summer semester of 2024, 23 students of architecture and spatial planning worked together with local stakeholders, the Local Agenda 21 and the district of Alsergrund in a co-creative design and planning process as part of the project “TIKTAK Galilei - Tactical Urbanism and Placemaking for Sustainable Climate Change Adaptation in Alsergrund” to develop a design for a temporary redesign of Galileigasse in Vienna's 9th district and implement it 1:1.

With a great deal of commitment and creativity, a design was created which was implemented in a 12-day construction workshop. The Garage Grande in Ottakring served as the construction workshop. Sawing, sanding, milling, screwing, painting and oiling took place here. As soon as the first flower beds were installed in the alley, they were planted together with pupils from the Galileigasse elementary school. A new tree, various shrubs and edible plants have also found their way into Galileigasse. Two outdoor classrooms, seating for young and old, raised beds and a stand-up café as well as a ground painting that invites children to play make the Galileigasse a high-quality public space with a high quality of stay.

The “Next Level Wohnstraße” project was so convincing that the Galileigasse was made traffic-calmed and even partially converted into a temporary pedestrian zone. The Alsergrund district has until 2028 to carry out a structural redesign. The results of the project will serve as an experiment and testing ground.

On June 16, Galileigasse was officially opened together with the Local Agenda 21 and the district of Alsergrund and explained as well as reflected on in greater depth by the students in a final presentation at VHS Alsergrund on June 27, 2024.
