St. Pölten is characterised by a strong heterogeneity: the central, medieval city centre with the railway station in the north and the government district in the east meets business parks, brownfield sites, single-family housing estates, attractive natural areas and rural structures. After decades of little population change, the city has grown steadily over the last 20 years. Recently named a climate pioneer city, a number of projects are underway, such as the gradual remodelling of the Promenadenring or the ‘Tangente St. Pölten’ cultural festival, which has left its mark on the city. We were able to work and develop initial ideas at the festival centre - the Löwinnenhof*.

The excursion took the groups to the St. Pölten urban planning centre, the Sonnenpark and the Mariazellerhöfe, via Josefstraße and the government district. On their own expeditions through the city, the students found some special places and challenging spatial situations. With different impressions, questions and impulses from the excursion at the beginning of October, the students can now work on their spatial development concepts and formulate a proposal for the strategic handling of the existing city and the local challenges.

The PR ‘Spatial Development Planning ISEK St. Pölten 2040’ is supervised by Lena Hohenkamp and Lena Schartmüller (ifoer), Anna Aigner (sociology), Ulrich Leth (traffic planning and traffic engineering) and Daniel Zimmermann (3:0 landscape architecture).
