In an exhibition at the Salzburg Museum, the work of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723), one of the most important master builders of European Baroque, is presented for several months. With buildings such as the Kollegienkirche (Collegiate Church) in Salzburg and the Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) in Vienna, Fischer von Erlach created icons of architectural history. As a visionary author, he published the first illustrated world history of architecture, “Entwurff einer Historischen Architectur, opens an external URL in a new window” (A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture). The Salzburg Museum in cooperation with the Wien Museum are taking the 300th anniversary of the day of the death of Fischer as an occasion to present the versatile oeuvre of the architect in a large-scale exhibition.

The copy of the famous “Entwurff einer Historischen Architectur, opens an external URL in a new window” in the exhibition is loaned from our rare books holdings. We are therefore glad to help spread the word about this fascinating exhibition.
