This new paper by Sandra Peer et al. explores the potential of fluorescence fingerprinting to track different sources of DOM inputs to rivers. Using 3D fluorescence spectroscopy, specific ratios of PARAFAC components were identified for municipal and various industrial wastewater treatment plants in a case study region, and such fingerprints were traced in the fluorescence signal of the receiving river.
At high flow conditions, diffuse DOM emissions mask the signal of WWTPs. Despite this challenge, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique in characterising the signals from WWTPs from different sectors and its potential to track their influence in the river at low flow conditions.
