Antibiotic resistance in the One Health context

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. In the 3sat documentary „Keimen auf der Spur – Wie eng Mensch, Tier und Umwelt verbunden sind“, our colleagues Julia Vierheilig and Norbert Kreuzinger, among others, explain why an interdisciplinary One Health approach that combines human medicine, animal health and environmental sciences is essential in order to address this complex problem in a holistic way.
They talk about
... the spread of antibiotic resistance across ecosystem boundaries
... how environmental factors influence this problem
... and how healthy, biodiverse ecosystems and advanced wastewater treatment technologies can play a vital role in combating antibiotic resistance.
But that’s not all—this fascinating documentary also delves into other interesting One Health research topics, such as invasive mosquito species and their role in disease transmission.
- Why this matters: Antibiotic resistance is a challenge that affects all of us. Solving it requires collaboration—between scientists, authorities, and society. Our environment plays a crucial role in this - and with it our responsibility.
- Our message: Healthy ecosystems and innovative technologies can help to slow down the spread of resistance. Protecting our environment is protecting our health.
