Team
As a result of the EU OSTrails project, opens an external URL in a new window, which has been running since February 2024, our team has grown: Suvini Lai, Andres Tabima and Geoffrey Karnbach have settled in well and are providing valuable support for OSTrails and the further development of the open-source DMP tool DAMAP, opens an external URL in a new window.
Data repository
TU Wien Research Data, opens an external URL in a new window, the institutional data repository of TU Wien, has made itself popular over the past year. After celebrating the two hundredth published dataset in summer, we have by now reached upload number 234. Five research groups at TU Wien use the community service which allows collecting different data sets and project outputs under one roof.
At the beginning of the year, we submitted a Core Trust Seal (CTS) application to get the sound quality of the data repository checked and hopefully approved soon. After a few improvements in July and the first reviewer feedback in November, we are currently working on the necessary improvements, which we expect to complete in early 2025.
TU Wien DMP Tool
Just in time for the end of the year, Campus IT was able to carry out an upgrade for the TU Wien DMP Tool, opens an external URL in a new window with bug fixes and a redesign of the user interface. Another brand-new feature is a direct link between the DMP tool and our data repository for the convenient exchange of data information. We look forward to further adjustments to optimise user-friendliness in the first quarter 2025. The open-source software DAMAP, on which the DMP tool is based, already offers a preview.
DBRepo
One of the major contributions of TU Wien to DBRepo, opens an external URL in a new window this year was the release of the Python library that allows Data Scientists to deposit and access research data - such as machine learning tensors - through interfaces they use and already know. In 2025, we want to extend our graphical- and data analytics interfaces.
TU Wien workshops
Since October, we have been offering a new training course in which our Data Protection and Document Management colleagues provide insight into the legal basis, challenges, and solutions for data protection-compliant video publishing. As requested, this course will be repeated in English in March, registration in TISS is already possible: Publishing videos - what to consider from a data protection perspective, opens an external URL in a new window.
Our popular Git workshop has been expanded and split into two parts in response to participants' feedback: Next year, there will be two Git sessions, one on the basics and one for advanced users. The trainings will take place on the same day so that they can be attended individually or as a package. A few seats are still available for July: Introduction to Git, opens an external URL in a new window, Mastering Git, opens an external URL in a new window.
You can find all upcoming workshops in the event calendar on our website.
With the TUesday Lounge, we found a new platform supporting the exchange with TU Wien colleagues. We actively participated and took over the moderation for the topic of public sector information data. We look forward to joining the TU Vision team in the lounge again in 2025!
Another positive experience was the fuTUre fit process, in which we were actively involved, particularly in the WG Research Data. The constructive work of this working group was very inspiring, and we will gladly take the ideas and contacts into the next year. The results of the individual working groups can be found in the report on the fuTUre fit Convention page.
Teaching
Following the successful launch of our LVA Introduction into Research Data Management, opens an external URL in a new window in the transferable skills catalogue in October 2023, the second round is now underway. With almost 40 enrolments and 17 active students, the lecture and exercise are again well attended. As planned, students from very different fields come together in this course. This time, we have many participants from civil and environmental engineering. Other participants come from mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, green chemistry, infrastructure management, media informatics, materials science, computational science & engineering, and spatial planning. Most registered students study at the Master's level, but some Bachelor's and PhD students also participate.
Information material
Together with our legal experts Peter Karg and Eva Bartlmä, we compiled a guide for students and their supervisors on the correct handling of research data and drafted sample agreements. We also revised our RDM Quick Start Guide, opens an external URL in a new window and even created an RDM comic, which you will hear more about soon.
Projects
SharedRDM Services and Infrastructure
The first year of the Shared RDM Services and Infrastructure project, opens an external URL in a new window was successfully completed. The project is supported by the BMBWF and serves the Austria-wide exchange of RDM experience and the further development of RDM tools and services. In WP3 on maDMPs, important milestones were achieved with further developments and the implementation of DAMAP at the Medical University of Graz. In WP6, among others, cheat sheets on various RDM topics were created, which will be published soon. In September, there was an opportunity for personal exchange at the project meeting in Graz, which was perceived as very fruitful by all participants and is to be continued next year at the EXPO of the Research Data Cluster on January 16-17.
Horizon Europe EOSC projects
We are currently partners in three EOSC-related Horizon Europe projects:
In addition, TU Wien is a member of the EOSC Association and, at the local level, of the EOSC Support Office Austria. In 2025, TU Wien will take over the chairmanship of the EOSC Support Office Austria Management Board on a rotating basis.
Further exchange with peers
The exchange with national and international RDM colleagues is essential for our work and the further development of our tools. Conferences and meetings of international project teams are a good opportunity for this, which we gladly and actively make use of. 2024 was a very successful year in this regard.
