Dr. Peter Schoeggl, Vice President Business Field Racing and Vehicle, AVL LIST GmbH teaches "Automated & Connected Driving" in our MBA Mobility Transformation. In our interview, he talks about Automated & Connected Driving, why this topic is relevant for executives, what impact the topic has on companies and society, and what he wants to teach students.
As an expert, why am I so passionate about Automated & Connected Driving?
- We make future vehicles much safer. Automated and connected vehicles recognize dangers in the environment and react independently to avoid dangerous situations. This will drastically reduce the number of accidents. For this it is necessary to develop sensors, information systems and intelligent control systems that reliably predict actions around the vehicle under all traffic and weather conditions and react accordingly considering the next future.
- We learn our vehicles to drive by themself. Automated driving will not only increase safety, autonomous driving will also make it possible to carry out entirely new activities in the car. The automated car becomes, in conjunction with connectivity, a multi-purpose device in which activities such as working, sleeping, eating and shopping can be carried out. The enable this, it needs to work out how people want to be driven to feel safe. How does a car have to drive to make the car passengers feel safe enough to sleep for a few hours? The future manufacturer-DNA will be influenced by this. To achieve this, it is necessary to develop sensor, computer and control structures with which the vehicles can be driven safely and comfortably for people, depending on the wishes of the occupants. Self-driving cars can certainly be seen as a major milestone in the automotive industry and we have the opportunity to play a key role here.
Why is the topic relevant for leaders?
From the technical point of view, a large number of vehicle domains are affected: sensors, control devices, software, actuators, connectivity devices. ADAS, AD and connectivity also influence all future E/E architectures, keyword domain and central computer. In addition, there are the topics of safety, ergonomics, interior design, medical factors such as seat design, physiology and psychology. The connectivity makes it possible to calculate of less critical functions no longer in the car, but in backend systems in order to reduce the energy consumption in the car. Seen from the outside, the requirements for liability, insurance, TCO (total cost of ownership), but also terms of employment (from home office to car office) are changing. Automated & connected driving redefines many topics of mobility, therefore this is important for a large number of leaders in different areas.
How does this topic effect companies or society??
When commuters work an hour in the vehicle every day, communication channels, employment relationships and insurance conditions within the company will change, keyword is “car office”, referring to “home office”. When vehicles produce nearly zero accidents, crash zones can be designed differently, which will change the constructions of future vehicles. Socially, the issues of reduced accident rates, insurance, fears of accidents involving autonomous vehicles and fears of accidents caused by hacker attacks are changing.
