Austria's last coal-fired power plant has stopped operating and offers space for innovative systems

 Kohlekraftwerk

After the end of this year’s heating season, the last coal-fired power plant in Austria has now been shut down. The power plant, which was completed in 1986, is located in Mellach, south of Graz, and has provided electricity and heat for 34 years by burning hard coal.
Although the plant is kept ready for operation on the natural gas fuel basis, for emergencies, sustainable uses for the location are also in planning.
Thanks to the good connection to roads, rail and power grid, Mellach is being developed into an “innovation hub”: a pilot plant for high-temperature electrolysis has been set up and battery storage facilities are planned for tests relating to electro mobility.

This is an important step to achieve our goal of switching to 100% green electricity in Austria by 2030.
