Our research focuses on Medical Radiation Physics and Accelerator Physics, with the shared aim of further developing the provision and application of ionising particle radiation in medicine, particularly in the context of ion therapy. Much of our experimental work is carried out at the MedAustron, opens an external URL in a new window Research and Therapy Centre in Wiener Neustadt. With the availability of proton beams up to 800 MeV and carbon and helium beams up to 400 MeV per nucleon, MedAustron, opens an external URL in a new window offers a unique research opportunity in Austria.

Our research projects in particle physics and their application in particle therapy are carried out in close collaboration with the Marietta Blau Institute for Particle Physics (MBI), opens an external URL in a new window, in particular with the Detector Development, opens an external URL in a new window Department headed by Thomas Bergauer, opens an external URL in a new window. In the field of accelerator physics, there is close cooperation with MedAustron’s, opens an external URL in a new window Engineering and Development Department.

Enthusiastic students are a key pillar of our research projects. The necessary qualifications are taught in specialised courses, opens an external URL in a new window at TU Wien. This provides students with excellent opportunities to pursue their interest in the medical applications of accelerator and radiation physics.
