Jenis Thongam was born in Manipur, India. He finished his bachelor's degree with Honours in Physics from Ramjas College, University of Delhi. He completed his Master's study in Physics from the National Institute of Technology Manipur, India. It was during this course that he took a keen interest in computational physics especially in the field of soft condensed matter. During his Master's study, his research was focused on polymer at the interface of two immiscible fluids. Three separate systems of topologically different polymers were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. Both the static behaviour and the chain dynamics were extensively studied.
Here at TU Wien, he has been working under Dr. Gerhard Kahl at the Institute for Theoretical Physics as a Ph.D candidate. The primary aim of his PhD thesis is to guide the experimentalists with the help of computer simulations and artificial intelligence algorithms in the design and synthgesize of biological, bio-related and colloidal macromolecules that self-assemble into desired target structures. As an initial step towards this, he is currently involved in a collaboration to set up up models for "Bent-Core Liquid Crystals" via ellipsoidal and sphero-cylindrical "patchy-particles" using the popular Kern-Frenkel inter-particle potential and to obtain the equillibrium phase diagram of these particles as a function of aspect ratio, bending angle, patch size, particle density and temperature.
