TU Wien excursion to SGL Composites GmbH and FACC AG

28. September 2023
A joint excursion of the Institute of Lightweight Structures and Structural Biomechanics and the Aircraft Systems Research Group of the Institute of Engineering Design and Product Development to SGL Composites GmbH and FACC AG in the Innviertel region took place on September 28th. The students, who have already completed courses in lightweight construction/composites as well as aircraft design and aircraft systems engineering, gained an insight into the production and working environment of renowned and internationally successful companies.

Visit at SGL Carbon in Ort im Innkreis

The excursion began at SGL Composites, which manufactures fiber composite components for the automotive industry in large-scale production in Ort im Innkreis. The process and the technologies behind the impressive, fully automated production lines for leaf springs and battery box components were presented to the students directly at the plant.
The second station was a visit to FACC. After a short introduction of the company, the participants were introduced to the production of various fiber composite components from the aerospace industry in numerous production halls. These included flaps, winglets and engine fairings as well as cabin interiors. All processing stages of the production as well as the quality control could be observed during the guided tour through the plants.
During the excursion, the TU Wien students not only gained exciting insights into real-life applications of their studies, especially with regard to lightweight construction/composites and aircraft design, but were also made aware of the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation. The participants were able to gather valuable impressions and insights with regard to the development of innovative technologies, the production and assembly of components as well as quality assurance and testing on test stands, allowing them to expand their existing knowledge.
The courses and field orientation modules that provide an understanding of the associated theoretical principles are listed on the corresponding websites of the institutes E307 and E317.
