Dear readers,

the year 2022 presented us with numerous challenges. While the first half of the year was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, rising energy costs put us in a difficult financial situation in the second half of the year. Nevertheless, we were able to overcome a large part of these difficulties and proudly look back on a productive year.

3,065 students graduated – including 13 sub-auspiciis doctoral candidates – and TU Wien welcomed 3,138 first-year students. With programs such as AKMath and TUForMath, TU Wien made an important contribution to the promotion of STEM for pupils, students and future talents. Our scientists received numerous grants and prizes worth several million euros and applied for 83 patents. This makes us the number 1 among domestic universities in the patent ranking.

Human Resources developed a new continuing education concept for employees and TU Wien received the equalitA seal of approval for the internal promotion of women. In addition, new buildings were opened, including the Atominstitut and Getreidemarkt, as well as the 5th generation of the Vienna Scientific Cluster
(VSC-5) went into operation.

In October, we managed a largely normal start into the winter semester 2022, another big step towards normality. In November, over 9,000 participants took part in the “Aktionstag”, a day of action to draw attention to our precarious financial situation. Thanks to negotiations with the ministry, university operations have been secured for 2023, and the ongoing talks for 2024 are promising.

All of this is just an excerpt from our successes in 2022. Read on to find out how TU Wien lived up to its motto “Technology for People”. We hope you enjoy reading it!
