Gyula Nagy, TU Wien, IAP, FB Atom- und Plasmaphysik

Seminar

Modification and analysis of materials by MeV ions

I will talk about two distinct topics on which I actively worked during the last few years. One of these topics is the patterned structuring of materials by micro-focused ion beams with applications in the fields of micro-optics and micro- fluidics. I will discuss the design process of our micro-components, such as diffraction gratings and cell capture devices, their realization by grayscale lithography, and then their characterization and functionality test. The second topic is materials analysis by ion micro- and macro-beams, with applications in thin film physics, medical research, and materials chemistry. In conjunction with this topic, I will present our recent methodological developments that enable the quantification of elemental concentration depth gradients by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. I will also discuss the applications of these developments i) to the calculation of diffusion coefficients in metal-organic framework micro- crystals, and ii) to the in-situ characterization of oxidative wear of hard coatings, such as titanium nitride and vanadium nitride. Finally, I will present our novel approach that allows for the time-efficient detection and characterization of micrometer-sized particles in large-area samples by ion beam analysis. This method was applied to study the distribution of metal debris originating from dental implants in human tissue sections.

Gyula Nagy did his PhD at the Laboratory of Ion-beam Applications at the Institute for Nuclear Research (ATOMKI) in Debrecen, and received his degree from the University of Debrecen in 2019. Between 2021 and 2024 he was a post- doctoral researcher in the Ion Physics group at Uppsala University. He joined the Atomic and Plasma Physics group of the Institute of Applied Physics at TU Wien in May 2024, as a University Assistant. His research focuses on the applications of ion beams, in particular to material modification and analysis.
