Nitrogen is a key nutrient in the activated sludge process, but its levels in industrial wastewater treatment plants are often too low, requiring supplementation with external sources.
In a recent feasibility study, Liad Weisz, Daniela Reif, Sascha Weilguni and colleagues explored the use of electrodialysis as a technique to recover ammonium from the anaerobic digestate liquor of municipal WWTPs, with the goal of reusing it as a nitrogen source in a nutrient-deficient pulp & paper WWTP.
The findings indicate that electrodialysis is a promising treatment technology for this purpose, offering potential benefits for both municipal and industrial WWTPs.
